Why we may struggle with Empathy
It’s Good Friday I woke to the sun, yes, the sun beaming in my window, which was a great reason for it to be a good Friday (after the dullest coldest March in 50 years). As I was about let my enthusiastic fingers rip over the keyboard for my blog (my first this year), the thought “so why is it called Good Friday?” pulled me up in my tracks. I have a choice Google it or ignore it. I Googled; it turns out the reason is unclear so I am choosing to…Continue

During any slowdown in the market it's a good idea to examine your true costs to identify if any of your products, services or incentives are no longer profitable.

A lot of people are dabbling with email newsletters and very few people are actually doing them well! I subscribe to a lot of e-newsletters and there is a big difference in those that send something out very sporadically, perhaps once every couple of months because they think they should... compared to those…Continue

Yesterday I was asked to do a 5 minute spotlight presentation to my networking group. The group is a mix of wonderfully talented women – a personal trainer, a business coach, a financial advisor, a designer, a marketeer, I could go on but I won’t. Suffice to say, there’s so many wonderful women in the group and they’re all brilliant at what they do.
Each month, a member of the group is asked to offer some words of wisdom from their particular industry & as the photography…Continue

Just to let you know that this April will witness the greatest change in the corporation tax position for many SMEs for many years!
If a SME holds a UK patent or considers obtaining a UK patent for some of its IP, then the Government will award a 10% rate of tax on the profit arising from the worldwide exploitation of that Patented IP for 20 years!
This is fantastic news for those wishing to raise investor money or for those planning to exit,

I have lost track of the number of times I have heard a business owner say, “Everyone is my target market”. In other words they are saying that their product or service “could” be used by anyone. The reality of the situation is that “could” and “will” are two very different things.
There is a saying that the eagle that chases two rabbits will probably catch neither.
The key to creating a successful business starts with establishing very clearly who is most likely to…
The is an article from infosecurity magazine website which is a valuable read for any business that believes cybercrime is something that happens to other businesses.
The frequency of successful cyber attacks has more than doubled over the last three years, but the annual cost to organizations has slowed dramatically in the last two years.
Undertaken by the Ponemon Institute and…Continue

After hearing this from a client last week I’ve found myself repeating it to people all week. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn”.
There are a lot of people and a lot of organisations that make the same mistakes over and over again. In fact many of the mistakes…
The first thing comes to mind when thinking of massage therapy is stress relief. It's also a crucial factor for anyone trying to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Clinical studies show that even a single 1 hour session can significantly lower heart rate, cortisol levels and insulin levels-all of which help reduce stress through massage therapy.
Taking care of your body should be at the top of your priorities. By adding therapeutic massage to your routine now, you'll feel, look…Continue
If you’re thinking of employing a Virtual PA, I can heartily recommend it. You might do it to outsource the jobs you aren’t so good at or don’t enjoy. A VPA might help you to get more done; sort out your admin, accounts, or answer your phone. Typing, transcription and travel are 3 more alliterative tasks that you might want someone else to do. But there are a whole host of benefits to a small business aside from getting more done.
However, before we get onto those additional benefits,…Continue

SMEs are quietly optimistic that their businesses will grow in 2013 despite tough ongoing market conditions. This is great news for the UK economy as according to the Federation for Small Businesses at the start of 2012

When you are starting up a new business there are loads of things to think about; premises, staff, stock, advertising and the rest. But before anything can begin, insurance has to be considered and, whilst some cover is mandatory, such as employer’s liability, and some is common sense, such as public liability and the usual buildings and contents, other cover may not be quite so clear. If you are not sure whether you need professional indemnity insurance, contact Sayce Insurance Brokers who…Continue

Planning a full year ahead can be tortuous if you get too detailed. I remember when I worked in a large company in the 90’s and held responsibility for a lot of the planning. I dreaded the end of the financial year when it had to be done. It was so detailed that by the time everyone had their say, it…Continue

The first 3 days of this week were very productive. I signed up 3 new representatives with the assistance of my Area Sales Manager, and they are all lovely ladies, keen to sell Avon products. However, the last two days were a literal washout, as I intended to go leafleting - didn't want to risk soggy leaflets, so I will probably work on Saturday and Sunday if fine. Next week I'm going to company headquarters in Northampton, can't wait! Although Avon is heavily involved in coaching,…Continue

You will see it in the press and never think that it will happen to your business, but, could your business survive if it is hit by or gets targeted by cyber attackers?
There are many different studies that will provide you with the various statistics surrounding the financial impact a cyber attack can leave a business burdened with, yet it is scary to see how many businesses don’t protect their balance sheets with cyber insurance.
You have your office, unit, shop or other…Continue
