It hasn’t been the best week in our house. My older daughter’s hope of getting into her dream school came to a crushing end and some interesting judging meant more disappointment at an Irish Dancing competition. (I’m allowed to not be objective!) My instinct as a mother is to protect her from any more heartache. But I can see the emotions travel across her face in the space of seconds – disbelief, pain, frustration, and then a resolve to salvage something positive from the situation.
It can be hard to find something to say that will lift her and not sound empty but she knows that set backs are all part of being someone who aims high. I think that for all of us it helps to know if we are one of those high aimers because being able to deal with the disappointment is a skill in itself –and it’s one of her numerous talents
She has had plenty of success in her 10 years and will have so much more because she has a fantastic attitude. If resilience was a name it would be hers but it’s not nearly as nice as the one she has!
