For those history lovers, we’ve picked our top tours; one from the medieval period, and one from the more modern period so that you can decide which tour is best suited to you, based on your preference for the period. Peltours are a tour organiser who are able to arrange tours and historical trips to  all locations throughout Europe for various groups.

A Trail of Martin Luther

One of the main events in European history with the Protestant Reformation, lead by a German man named Martin Luther. This shaped European history, and was the cause of many rebellions, battles and tensions in late-medieval to early-modern Europe.

Walk-through history in the footsteps of Martin Luther! A typical tour begins in Mainz, which is the home of the Gutenberg Museum, and the home of the famous printed bible. Then onto Worms, where you will stand in the exact spot where Luther refused to recant before the Imperial Diet. Next, you will visit Wartburg castle which became Luther’s sanctuary after he had been “outlawed”. This castle is where Luther spend time controversially translating the bible into German, before it was only allowed to be printed in Latin. Discover the birth and death place of Luther, Eiselben – you can even visit the home which he was born in! Most notably, you will visit the church which spurred the Reformation on in Wittenberg; where Luther offered services and nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door.

Other parts of the tour include:

  • St Thomas Cathedral in Leipzig
  • The Augustinian Monastery where Luther studied
  • The grounds of the Wittenberg University
  • A cellar dinner and brewery tour, where you can sample beer and enjoy a traditional German meal.

Occupied Poland tour

By far one of the worst hit countries by the second world war and the Nazi regime was Poland. Fought over and occupied by both Adolf Hitler’s Nazi’s on the German side and the Soviet Russians who answered to Stalin, Poland was consequentiality badly and grievously affected. Soon after the start of WWII, the Nazis would start their systematic and brutal persecution of the Jewish population, building extermination camps in the country to implement what is called their “Final Solution”. The Holocaust is something that must be remembered and retaught so that everyone is aware of the horrors that took place, which is why we are recommending this tour as a must-do to further and deepen your knowledge of the atrocities.

An example itinerary of a tour like this is as follows:

  • Explore the ancient heart of Gdańsk, which is where the first battles of WWII took place.
  • Visit the site of Hitler’s HQ during the war in Kętrzyn – this is where von Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate Hitler in 1944.
  • The death camp of Treblinka.
  • Next stop is Warsaw, a city which resisted occupation and consequently paid a terrible price; 200,000 civilians were killed and the city was left in ruins by 1945. There is a tour of the old town which has since been beautifully restored.
  • A visit to the National Military museum
  • Spend a day in Krakow, Poland’s former capital. There are many sights to see here such as St Mary’s cathedral, the historical Jewish district of Kazimierz and Oskar Schindler’s factory.
  •  See the most infamous concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, to educate yourself the horrors of the Nazi Regime, which are manifested here.
