Catholic Icons and Figurines: More than Just a Statue

Catholic figurines and icons have been a pivotal point of faith and inspiration for centuries in the Catholic faith. Figurines typically depict the great Saints, Mother Mary, Our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as some notable other Catholic icons and patron saints.  The symbolism attached to such figurines including the shades of colour has special significance in the Catholic faith.  Add-ons and ornamental decorations like halos and wings are also present. Popular choices for making these figurines include materials such as wood, Gold and glass. (Information Credit: Holyart

Catholic figurines are widespread among many Catholic homes in modern times; they are an appropriate medium for honouring and remembering specific elements of faith.

History

Statues and figurines have been in use in the Catholic Church for quite some time now, even before the printing press was invented. As a result, The Bible was not readily available in a written form for the masses, with individual Bibles being nonexistent.

Catholic figurines and Statues were introduced as a way of teaching the mass of the bible.  Religious art like this had become a staple for most Churches, which were now used extensively for imparting the teachings of the Bible to the people.

Catholic Figurines in use today

  1. Catholic figurines can be used for remembering one’s personal devotion towards a particular saint or Icon. All of these icons have specific symbolism attached to them. For instance, the St. Patrick figurine is a popular choice in homes because of its connection with beauty and meaning.
  2. Figurines are used for honouring any religious service. This can include remembering favourite teachers, priests or a member of the clergy.
  3. Figurines and Icons are almost always present when remembering a loved one.  Catholic figurines of patron saints can serve as revered adornments inside the home or in the garden.
  4. Figurines with intricate details, colour and deep symbolism as well as some interactive features can help older Catholics to educate the young Catholics about the different aspects of their faith. For instance. The Our Lady of Grace triptych figurines can help illustrate significant biblical events.
  5.  There are other innovative ways Catholic figurines can be used, such as incorporating them into a greeting card. There are many online stores which can prepare customised greeting cards with a Catholic touch.

The Purpose:

Catholics praying to a statue is not an uncommon sight but very different from Idolatry.  Catholics worship with their entire beings and use all of their senses when they pray. Thus the presence of a statue is intended to draw disciples towards the path of God. For instance, a Statue of Mother Mary can provide an appropriate conduit for disciples to meditate and contemplate the Great mysteries of God.

Catholic icons and figurines thus form an important part of the Catholic faith. They are primarily used to convey the teachings of the faith to new Catholics, especially Children. There are many online sites dedicated to Catholic imagery, icons and figurines.
