I've recently been approached by a Reading student who is looking for one week's work experience in September 2011 as part of the school curriculum. Although the placement is required for September, the plan needs to be finalised by March.
I know from experience that it's hard to find placements for students where they can get some real experience - ie not just making coffee and opening the mail. I've heard of brilliantly successful work placements and some total failures.
It's important that work experience gives students a proper view of working life and helps them improve their self-esteem and confidence, skills and future employability. Additionally, it can help to firm up their ideas about which career they would like to follow. It's very difficult to make subject and career choices at that stage in life, so relevant work experience can really assist.
We often hear that school leavers are ill-prepared for employment... As a business owner, a mother and a former tutor, I feel that we all have a responsibility to help the younger generation and to support them in their work choices and personal development.
So if anyone out there has any ideas or potential work placement opportunities, I'd love to hear from you.
