‘if you build it, they will come’
Although this philosophy worked pretty well for Kevin Costner and his baseball pitch, unfortunately in real life and particularly in business, we can’t afford to have this romantic vision.
Many believe you just need to create a site and the visitors will come in droves. But for all new websites out there, you have to get word out initially. To help get you started, we’ve put together 7 very simple things you can do to tell the world about your new site.
Footer of emails
It’s as simple as that. Just add a link to your website in the footer of all emails you send out. In most email clients you can set up a ‘signature’ to include whatever you want which automatically gets inserted onto every email you compose.
Business cards / word of mouth
Word of mouth is a powerful thing, so tell everyone you meet about your new website. Make sure you have some business cards handy with your website written on them and give them out at any opportunity.
Send out an email newsletter
If you have a list of email address (even if they’re just friends and family to begin with) compile a professional looking newsletter email telling them about your new website and encourage them to forward it to their friends. It might even be worth offering them an incentive to do so such as entry into a competition to win something.
A professional newsletter doesn’t have to break the bank either. Have a look at the templates available here:
Create a business page on Linked in, Facebook and Twitter
Love it or loathe it, social media is completely free of charge, so harness it’s power and create your presence on as many as possible. Encourage friends and existing customers to ‘like’ or ‘follow’ you and then use this as a medium to shout about your new website.
Create a promotional video on your expertise
You only have to look on YouTube to see that there are all sorts of businesses with videos on there. Whether they’re demonstrating how to install a wood burning stove or showing you how to create a hair masterpiece, their objectives are all the same – to get word out about their business and direct traffic to their website.
Think how you might be able to offer insight relevant to your business that your customers might find useful and put together a video on it.
Create a Press release
If you’re able to create a unique angle on your business and present it in a well written article, press releases are a great way to generate some interest in your business. Press releases are mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to assignment editors at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and/or television networks. So think of the most relevant outlet for your business and send in your article, just make sure to include a link to your website in there.
Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC)
Sometimes while waiting for work on optimising your site for the natural search engine rankings to take effect, it might be an idea to embrace a bit of PPC advertising. You can set a budget per day but in order to get a good return on investment you should ensure you select the most appropriate keywords and phrases for your advert to appear.
For any method you adopt to promote your site, keep an eye on your Google Analytics account to see which methods work and which don’t. With that information you’ll know where you should concentrate your efforts in the future. Read this article for more information:
