Options for financing your business

There are a number of different ways to obtain finance for your business.  When deciding which route to take you should consider the use to which the money is to be put, who carries the risk and the overall cost.

All of these questions should be addressed by your business plan, which should include detailed profit and loss, cash flow and…

Sharon Shoesmith - fair or unfair dismissal?

Whatever the rights and wrongs in the case of Sharon Shoesmith and Baby P, it is clear that correct disciplinary procedure wasn't followed and that Sharon Shoesmith should have had an opportunity to put her case to her employer in formal disciplinary proceedings.

Regardless of whether or not she messed up, Ed Balls did the wrong thing when he intervened and ordered her dismissal - without a fair hearing.

Employment law applies to all employers and employees and…

Note-taking at meetings – a knowledge resource or a waste of time?

We’ve all done it – attended a meeting or event and taken notes about the subject discussed; the key points made by presenters; references from the case studies/examples provided; actions we agreed to complete or those we were allocated; and have all no doubt dutifully jotted down the date of the next meeting. Why?

In my latest blog (see link below) I highlight ways in which you can ensure that the notes you take a meetings become a knowledge resource - for action, reference, learning…

Why bother employing staff..?

My work often comes via HR depts who suspect that an employee is either not what they claim on their CV or that they are misbehaving in some way on company time. My client (the company) then hires me to find the evidence.

With this in mind I went to an HR seminar today, and being a sole trader, the major point I gained from it was

'why on earth would anyone employ staff?'

HR is a complete and utter nightmare for employers.

Generally speaking, once an… Continue

How to be successful in business selling to retail

I’ve spent a lot of my business life working in and around consumer goods companies.  Now, the FMCG world is an interesting place, dominated by the uneasy relationships between the big retailers and the smaller suppliers.

Over recent years the situation has become even more polarised, with the retail giants taking and even more dominant place on our high-street, as this table…

Yet more parental policies for employers to get to grips with....

Having just got to grips with the recent parental policies (in fact I've just produced a full set of parental policies for a client of mine), the Government has issued a further consultation document seeking to change the rules, yet again.  Not all of it's bad, but it's another layer of changes and confusion for employers to unravel.

Click here to see the consultation document and…

Get Skilled Up!

According to a survey of 4064 jobseekers in 2010 by Home Learning College and Reed.co.uk, around one-third of job applicants were finding that a lack of qualifications was holding them back.

Around 50% were resorting to further training to update their skills with ambitious job seekers finding that targeted vocational training added value to their CVs.

Higher education does not guarantee success, and the survey found that 1/5th of graduates believed that…

Bribery Act 2010 (Act)

The Bribery Act 2010 will come into force on 1 July 2011 setting out procedures which relevant commercial organisations can put into place to prevent persons associated with them from bribing. Is your business card an investment or an extra cost?

Business cards are a traditional tool in trade used to provide a person’s contact details to possible partners or customers. If not all, most companies print business cards for every employee that deals with clients in order for them to initiate and encourage communication. This simple, inconspicuous assumption is a manifestation of the importance of the business card. While business cards have always been an integral part of trading, the value of a business card has escalated to a higher…

Why should I use a professional photographer?

A question I and all photographers hate to hear, but, after some of our customers have found out, doing it your self can cost you good future business and the reputation of your company!

As cameras grow in digital sophistication it is becoming easier for everyone to get pleasing results for apparently little cost. However, using an amateur to take an important…

Stand out! WOW them! Be Brilliant!

I recently read a book by Michael Heppell entitled 5 Star Service.  I've met many people who would do themselves a big favour if they read it too.  It's slightly gushy, but the message is strong...

GO THE EXTRA MILE!

Don't just deliver what you said you would deliver; exceed expectations. Create the WOW factor.

Hello...HELLO!!

As with all things a start had to be made somewhere so here it is. And its quite a departure from my normal blogs regarding marathonns and double marathons. I thought the best place to start would be an introduction, thats seems 'normal'.

I live in Newbury, close to Greenham Common (home to many glow in the dark rabbits) with my wife, two daughters and three guinea pigs. We moved to Newbury from a small village near Arundel, West Sussex. This move has brought everything we…
